Hi everyone,
Hello GitHub Education Team and Community,
I am writing to express my concern and seek clarification regarding the recent changes to the GitHub Copilot Student Plan, specifically the removal of high-reasoning models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude Opus from the manual model selection menu.
As students, we rely on these advanced models not just for simple code completion, but as sophisticated learning companions. The ability to switch to Claude 3.5 Sonnet or Opus has been a game-changer for many of us when dealing with:
Complex Debugging: Solving intricate logic errors that standard models often miss.
Architectural Design: Understanding how to structure large-scale projects and complex codebases.
Advanced Research: Learning cutting-edge programming paradigms where high-reasoning capabilities are essential.
The sudden transition to a restricted "Auto Mode" or the removal of these specific models significantly impacts our workflow. While we understand the need for a "sustainable" service, the lack of manual selection for premium models feels like a major downgrade for the educational experience.
Specific Issues Observed:
Models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Opus, and GPT-5.4 are no longer visible in the VS Code Copilot Chat dropdown.
Users are encountering "Contact your admin" messages even on personal student accounts.
The "Auto Mode" often defaults to less capable models, which struggle with complex multi-step reasoning tasks.
Our Request:
We kindly ask the GitHub Education team to consider:
Restoring manual selection of these models for verified students, perhaps with a reasonable monthly usage cap (rate-limiting) rather than total removal.
Providing a discounted "Pro" tier for students who need access to these premium models for their advanced coursework.
Transparency regarding which models are actually being utilized when "Auto Mode" is active.
We believe that access to the best tools shouldn't be a luxury for the next generation of developers. We appreciate GitHub's ongoing support for students and hope for a solution that balances sustainability with the high-quality AI tools we need to excel.
Best regards,
